Route Data and Operating Standards
Distances, seasonal closures, fleet specifications, and service metrics
Route documentation is maintained for 1,300 miles of coastal highway across three states. Data is verified twice per year, in March and September, by planners who drive each segment. The segment library currently holds 42 entries, and the viewpoint library holds 26 entries. Distance and driving time figures are recorded from GPS traces rather than published maps, since posted times on US-101 and SR 1 frequently exceed actual travel times by 15 to 25 percent.

Pacific Coast Route Services
Segment-based planning covering ocean highways, coastal towns, metropolitan stops, and designated viewpoints
oldhamite.com maintains planned route segments along the Pacific Coast of the United States, covering approximately 1,300 miles of highway between San Diego, California, and Cape Flattery, Washington. The service was established in 2016 in San Francisco and currently documents 42 separate route segments, each averaging 60 to 90 miles of driving. Route data is reviewed twice per year, in March and September, to account for construction schedules and seasonal road closures.
Pacific Coast Highway Corridor, San Francisco to San Diego
The Pacific Coast Highway corridor runs 460 miles between San Francisco and San Diego by way of California State Route 1. Continuous driving takes nine to ten hours without stops, and itineraries offered by oldhamite.com split that distance across three to five days. The route passes Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, Monterey, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Big Sur, San Simeon, Pismo Beach, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Santa Monica, and Long Beach before reaching San Diego.
Oregon and Washington Ocean Routes
The Oregon Coast route follows US-101 for 363 miles between Astoria and Brookings, passing Cannon Beach, Tillamook, Newport, Florence, Coos Bay, Bandon, and Gold Beach. The Washington section continues from Ilwaco north toward Olympic National Park and Cape Flattery, with a passenger and vehicle ferry crossing the Columbia River between Astoria and Megler, a distance of 4.1 miles covered in roughly 15 minutes at a fare of $10 for a standard car.
Coastal Town Stops
Coastal towns along the corridor are catalogued with population figures, walkable street grids, parking capacity, and typical dwell times. Carmel-by-the-Sea, population approximately 3,200, has no street addresses for most businesses and a downtown that can be covered on foot in about 90 minutes. Mendocino, population approximately 900, sits on a headland and holds about 400 public parking spaces, most metered between 10 AM and 6 PM.
City Extensions
Metropolitan stops at either end of the corridor and at intermediate points are handled as extensions. San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Portland, and Seattle each add one to three days to a coastal route. The plan for each city lists transit options, parking garages with hourly rates, and neighborhoods within walking distance of common hotel clusters.
Viewpoints and Scenic Overlooks
Twenty-six designated viewpoints are held in the route library. Each entry records mile marker, parking capacity, turn restrictions, and the direction of travel required for a safe stop. Examples include Bixby Creek Bridge at mile marker 43 on SR 1, a 714-foot structure completed in 1932 with 12 parking spaces on the north side; McWay Falls in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, where access requires a paid day-use area and a quarter-mile trail; and Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach, a 235-foot sea stack reachable along the beach at low tide.
Trip Logistics and Booking Services
Itinerary construction, lodging coordination, vehicle arrangements, and roadside assistance
Logistics services cover the arrangements that sit between a route selection and an actual departure. oldhamite.com employs six full-time planners and works with 38 accommodation partners and 9 vehicle rental agencies across California, Oregon, and Washington. Reservations are submitted through the website form and processed within two business days.
Custom Itinerary Construction
An itinerary is assembled from the segment library based on a stated departure point, arrival point, travel dates, and preferred daily driving time. The default assignment is four hours of driving per day, with a maximum of seven. Travelers who state no preference receive a five-day plan for the 460-mile California corridor.
Overnight Accommodation Coordination
Accommodation requests are matched against 38 partner properties in three price bands. Budget properties range from $85 to $140 per night and include motels in Crescent City, Fort Bragg, and Coos Bay. Mid-range properties range from $150 to $320 per night and include independent inns in Cannon Beach, Cambria, and Santa Barbara. Upper-range properties begin at $340 per night and include coastal resorts in Monterey and Laguna Beach.
Vehicle Rental and One-Way Drop-Off
Vehicles are arranged through nine rental agencies with counters at the San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Portland, and Seattle airports. Three classes are documented. A mid-size SUV seats five with luggage and rents from $79 per day. A full-size SUV seats seven and rents from $129 per day. A Class B camper van sleeps two and rents from $185 per day, with a 20-foot length that excludes it from several downtown parking garages.
Flexible Scheduling and Route Adjustments
Bookings may be left open-dated for up to 12 months from the date of purchase. Dates are confirmed when lodging is booked, and no change fee applies to a date moved more than 14 days before the first night. Date changes inside 14 days carry a $60 administrative fee when lodging has already been confirmed.
En-Route Support and Road Condition Updates
Support operates a phone line from 7 AM to 9 PM Pacific Time daily and monitors text messages outside those hours. Average answer time is under two minutes during business hours. Road condition checks draw on California Department of Transportation, Oregon Department of Transportation, and Washington State Department of Transportation feeds, refreshed every 30 minutes.
Pricing and Reservation Terms
Planning fees, inclusions, cancellation windows, and seasonal availability
Planning fees are charged per travel day rather than per traveler. A standard itinerary costs $95 per day, with a three-day minimum. A five-day California corridor plan therefore costs $475, and a seven-day plan costs $665. A single combined plan covering both the California and Oregon coasts, typically ten to twelve days, is priced at $85 per day.
